Does Voice over IP Telephony Spell the End for Traditional Phone Systems?
Landlines are
still available from most phone companies. However, Voice over Internet
Protocol, or VoIP, is quickly supplanting traditional phone service as new
accounts are set up. While traditional phone service isn't necessarily dying
out, VoIP is an easier and better maintained service type.
Voice over Internet Protocol
provides landline service by sending the phone signals through an internet
connection. You can use a regular phone with the service by plugging the phone
into a special adaptor. This is available for home use or for IP phone systems
for small businesses.
The question really isn't
about whether VoIP spells the end for traditional landline systems. It's about
how long phone companies are willing to keep traditional phone service alive
given its upkeep costs.
The wiring that Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) uses
has been deteriorating, and fixing or upgrading the wiring is costly. Because
most phone companies now offer internet service along with phone service, it's
more cost-effective for them to combine the two and use VoIP. So VoIP isn't
necessarily pushing POTS out of the way -- it's more like VoIP presents an
easier route for providers to use.
